SHORTER WORKING HOURS

TO RELIEVE UNEMPLOYMENT Press Association CHRISTCHURCH, Thursday. A resolution suggesting that shortening of hours might be a means of relieving unemployment was passed at a conference between a special committee of the City Council and members of the staff and employees. The meeting considered a proposal in a resolution carried at the last meeting of the City Council for the introduction of a 44 hours’ working week for the council’s employees, the purpose being to relieve unemployment. The conference this evening was boycotted by the larger groups of employees of the City Council. The original proposal in the City Council came from Air. A. E. Armstrong, and was opposed by the Mayor and Labour members of the council.
