SHEARERS PROTEST
LIVING CONDITIONS BAD MINISTER PROMISES HELP Press Association WELLINGTON, Today. A strong protest against the living conditions of shearers in various parts of the country was made by a deputation from the New Zealand Workers’ Union to the Minister of Labour, the Hon. S. G. Smith, yesterday. It was pointed out to the Minister that shearers were supposed to work under the Shearers’ Accommodation Act, which provided for good living conditions on farms, and other facilities for giving them the necessities of life. It was stated that in many cases men were forced to put up with extremely bad conditions. The Minister gave his assurance that the question would be fully investigated and that, if possible, he would make a personal inspection of the accommodation in some parts. He would make his own decisions and not be dictated to by someone else. He hoped to make his position a live one and to see that the law was carried out. The deputation had his assurance that the workers would be protected and that their living conditions would be looked after.
