ELLERSLIE NOTES
HORSES FOR TE AWAMUTU MOUNTAIN GUIDE WELL After the Great Northern meeting a quiet period usually pervades Ellerslie until the approach of the early spring meetings, but, with a floating permit allocated to the Waipa Racing Club a chance is afforded horses from headquarters assisting toward their upkeep during the winter months. However, it is not a strong Ellerslie i representation in at Te Awamutu, just over a dozen, namely, Kauri Park, Mountain Guide, Quincoma, Eager Rose, Lady’s Boy, Freyja, Maori Boy. Bennie, Hannibal, Land Measure, Day Form, Wild Country and Merry Lu. There will obviously be a few defections on acceptance day, Friday, but the majority will keep their engagements. Taking Three T. E. Davison, who is stationed at Ellerslie for the winter, intends racing Maori Boy, Day Form and Lady’s Boy, the last being purchased by this mentor a few days ago. This fine galloper has not struck form for several months, but apart from this he has not been extensively raced. Winter ■weights are not in favour of Lady’s Boy, and a return to the orthodox scale will do much to enhance his prospects. Of Service Yet It was unfortunate that J. Lambess could not give Kauri Park the work to fit him for his Great Northern Hurdles and Steeplechase engagements, but perseverance resulted in one race being exacted from the Elysian gelding—a third, too. However, the old leg trouble recurred and he was not seqji out on the last day. He is doing steady work at present and if he survives it is intended to race him at the Waipa meeting. A safe, reliable jumper and a good stayer, such as Kauri Park, should find no difficulty ; in making a bold showing at Te Awamutu. An interesting entry for the Ngarotu Hurdles at Te Awamutu is Mountain Guide, whose last-minute withdrawal from the Great Northern Hurdles robbed the event of a lot of interest. It was soreness which prevented this young jumper from taking part in the race, but he has recovered well and is working freely again. Incidentally, the riding of Mountain Guide at Waipu will mean J. Sharkey’s first mount since his accident at the Avondale Jockey Club’s autumn meeting. Horses to Rest Unless something untoward happens, the representatives—Kaiwanga and Gold Lily of the Northern owner, Mr. F. E. Lewis, are to be spelled for the winter. Both horses have been under different trainers, but it is understood that they will return to Kaiwanga’s trainer, R. E. Brown.
