MUDLARKS
SOME THAT REVEL IN HEAVY GOING Several horses billed to appear at the Auckland winter carnival have previously raced well in the heavy going at Alexandra Park. Judging by present appearances the track for the forthcoming meeting will be decidedly holding, and it will no doubt get heavier as the racing progresses. Reviewing performances of last: June, under similar conditions, the following pacers and trotters, which are again on the scene, were in the money: Cardinal Logan (first and third), Floraline (first and two thirds), Linkman (first and third), Akenehi (first), Sebisca (first), Rerewai (first), Nelson Dillon (first). The Tartar (first:). Nelson Tasker (first), Mountain Dell (first), Trustworthy (two seconds and a third), Evelyn Locanda (two seconds), Hostess (second), Dipnoi (second), Hal Chimes (second), All Bell (second). The previous year Gold Jacket, Kolmar, Rose Bingen and Cardinal Logan were winners, while ill 1927 Reremai, Fioraline, Uncle Bert. Wood vale, and Cardinal Logan paid first dividends. BENEFIT TROTTING NO FIXTURE AT ADDINGTON AUCKLAND CLUB’S POSITION The proposal to hold a benefit meeting in order to help the unemployed in Christchurch has been considered by - the committee of the New Zealand Metropolitan Trotting Club, but after discussion it was turned down. The committee decided that it would not bo advisable to hold such a meeting in view of the fact that the weather at this time of the year was not dependable, and that other attractions would be too great to make the project a success. Also, the benefit meeting would come too close to the big August fixture. It was pointed out that the benefit meeting that was held for the Earthquake Relief Fund last year had not been a success, because the public liad not responded. Position In Auckland The Auckland Trotting Club has not definitely decided whether a meeting for the unemployment fund will be held. When the winter fixture has been dispensed with, the management will go further into the question. Mr. Mabee, interviewed yesterday by “Abaydos.” said that in the event of tho project reaching definite form, the function would not be held till some time in August.
could not stave off the challenge of Arrowmaid, who beat him by half a length, but was still two lengths away from the winner. Garvary ran a good race into fourth, and following him were Royal Limond and Bellbird. who were clear of the rest. Night Lark stopped very badly in the straight. Cave Man was slow away at the start. Tescliemaker Handicap Although Black Duke had the best staying credentials in the Tescliemaker Handicap, the public was stalled off him in favour of Camisader and Ranelagh, although a last minute commission sent him up to third favourite. Black Duke was always going easily in the race behind Royal Mint and Ranelagh, with Evening alongside him and Camisader behind, and when asked to challenge the pacemakers he smothered them very quickly and went on to win by a, length, with rather more in hand than the margin indicates. Ranelagh stayed on well to take second money, with Camisader two lengths farther away and Evening almost on terms. Royal Mint, Mount Boa and Arch Arrow (who suffered at the start) were next. Black Duke was much the best horse in the contest, but Ranelagh’s performance was a fine one, as it was his first effort beyond a mile. Hack Steeplechase The positions out in front did not vary much in the Gladstone Hack Steeplechase. Diamond Jack lay second behind Bonatic over the first mile, with Tunahoe, Gala Day, Gay Jim and Barrington next. But going into the back he took command from Tunamoe and Bonatic, with Gay Jim tho only other within range, Gala Day having fallen at the second of the stand double. Bonatic came to grief at the back post and rails, and Diamond Jack, Tunamoe and Gay Jim were left well clear. Diamond Jack, ridden by his owner, made no mistake with the remaining fences and came home a good winner from Tunamoe. Gay Jim broke down at the last brush and Barrington was well back to secure third money. Goldtown, Department and Peterline were the only others to complete the course. Rosewill Handicap Jock o’ Hazeldean was never far back in the Rosewill Handicap. He was disappointed when trying to make a run on the inside of Kentish Lady and Fair Money at the top of the straight, but another opening came immediately afterward between the pair and F. Thomson pulled jiim into the gap, forging through and heading Fair Money a few strides off the post. Meitui la3 r near the winner throughout the race and finished more strongly than the pace-making Kentish Lady to earn third stake, a length and a-half behind Fair Money. Fortalice, Toawai and Sweet Refrain all came from well back. Punchestown was last away and never improved. High Speed, Last Mark and The Dove showed good speed early. Doncaster Handicap
Inevitable, a very hot favourite, moved out very smartly from the tapes in the Doncaster Handicap, but A. E. Ellis let him fall back behind Smithereens, Rascal and Royal Tractor before a furlong had been traversed and did not attempt a run till well into the straight, when he quickly took command and was not extended to sta.ve off strong challenges from First Raid and then Smithereens, who came again after losing his position on the turn and looked for a moment like catching the favourite unprepared. Rascal and Royal Tractor made runs early, but were well beaten at the finish. Following are the results: TEKAPO HURDLES Of £140; 1 h mile I—ANTRIM1 —ANTRIM BOY (G. J. Barton), b g, 10.0, W.
