MOTOR-LORRY NOISES

THUMPING DOWN HILL COMPLAINTS FROM RESIDENTS Complaints received at the previous meeting of the One Tree liiil Borough Council that heavy, solid-tyred motororries caused unnecessary noise and vibration while descending Farmers Hill, Great South Road, were recoiVdsred at last evening's meeting of the council. The Mayor. Mr. J. S. I lardwicke, presided. The borough tr ffic Inspect! reported that he had received complaints that many motor-lorry owners had been blamed for tho nuisance. The inspector had interviewed several owners, and in only one instance had he found justification for complaint. The trouble may be said to be more the fault of the bitumen joints than in the lorries themselves. By however little the bitumen stood above the surface of the concrete, the solid tyres of lorries were inclined to jump at the joint, naturally causing some noise and vibration where a 10-ton lorry was concerned. Cr. W. J. Hancock mentioned that additional noise was caused by the back-firing of engines when the vehicles were descending the hill in gear. The question was again referred to the traffic inspector. Parking of motor-cars within the borough limits during the recent race meeting at Ellerslie was reported to have been satisfactory. It was expected that the number of heavy traffic licences issued by the borough would equal last year’s total. A donation ol £1 Is was voted to the Inspectors Association.
