RUGBY LEAGUE CODE
! COUNCIL TO COMPILE RECORDS OF GAME IN PROVINCES “In your opinion, is the game making the progress it should? If not, what, in your opinion, is the reason therefor?” This was one of the clauses of a circular letter the management committee of the Auckland Rugby Football League received at its meeting last evening from the council of the New Zealand Rugby Football League. The letter stated that for the purpose of compiling statistical records referring to provincial Leagues, the council wanted replies to the following further items: (a) Number and name of clubs, senior, junior and schoolboys. (b) Number of registered players. (c» Grounds available. (d) Approximate average Saturday attendance at each ground, and gate money collected. (e) Is the game in your district. increasing in popularity? The Auckland Rugby League’s advisory committee recommended that the question of supplying the information desired be left in the hands of the chairman and secretary. AUCKLAND GATE-MONEY The chairman, Mr. George Rhodes, said he did not intend to answer the clause referring to amount of gate money, whereupon, Mr. L. Binns, one of the Auckland League’s representatives on the New Zealand Council, explained that the letter was a circular being sent out to all provincial Leagues. The council felt that in some centres the code .was not progressing as it should. The replies were wanted only for the good of the game.
Mr. Rhodes: We could not give them the attendance, and as for the gate money, it is not their business to know that.
Mr. A. Redwood (Richmond) said that tho Auckland League should help the New Zealand council all it could, as the council was fostering the game Mr. Rhodes said he would not ask members of the Auckland League to go to the various grounds and count the attendance. “We cannot tell exactly what that is on Car law Park.” he said. Tie could not see how knowing what the gate-money was would help the New Zealand League. Mr. Binns pointed out that there was more in the circular than that. The representation of the various Leagues on the councidl would come into consideration. Auckland might be entitled to more than two representatives on the New Zealand council, he said.
Mr. Rhodes assured the meeting that he was not out to “have a go” at the council. He wanted to help it as much as possible. Mr. E. Stallworthy, another member of the New Zealand Council, pointed out that if the amount of gate money was not supplied, tlie New Zealand Council would only have to refer to the Auckland Rugby League’s balance sheet for last year, which had been made public. The recommendation of the advisory committee was eventually adopted, Mr. Rhodes indicating that he would supply the figures from last year’s balance sheet. SOCCER CO-OPERATION The question of the transfer of A. H Payne, from Ponsonby to Ngaruawahia. was referred to the New Zealand Council It was decided to donate two guineas to the Auckland Amateur Athlete* Club’s appeal to send A. J. Elliott and .T. AN'. Savidan to the Empire Games A letter was received from the Auckland Football Association asking if the League would recognise disqualifications or suspensions on players by that body, as a Soccer player who had been suspended had expressed the intention of playing League football The Soccer authorities in turn were pre pared to recognise League disqualifications and suspensions.
