AWAPUNI NOTES
HASTINGS CANDIDATES RED BANK SHOWS SPEED Special to TUB SUN PALMERSTON X., Today. In view • of a nui - Lkt of the candidates for Hawke’s Bay yesterday morning, it was particularly ; unfortunate that the heavy rain overany* jumping attempted at Awapuni prior to their departure. Fortunately, before the conditions became too bad the jumpers had been very active on the morning previously. Bed Bank, who will contest the Hawke's Bay Steeplechase, was jumped ’•n Monday morning in company with 1 Corneroff. who claims an engagement I in the Woodlands Hark Steeplechase, , the open class candidate having the i measure of his companion throughout, li On Tuesday morning, lied Bank > (A. E. Stratton) was partnered by rl Elicit (A. McDonald) on a round on . the course proper, Mister Gamp fit. || Reed) joining in at the seven-furlong > post. Red Bank was in the van ) 'throughout, and stayed there to the H end to lead Mister Gamp home, with ! ; Elicit beaten off. The All Red geklI ing \v<-nt particularly well, but the l three miles may find him out on Fri- > : day, 1 Arrowhead Improving [ Arrowhead (R. Reed) and Bvening | Hero (T. Green), who claim flat en- | gagements at Hastings, were com* i panions in a live-furlong gallop. They 1 kept together right into the straight. 1 where Arrowhead drew clear. The * Arrowsmith gelding is on the improve. | and should not disgrace himself at the I lixture. Bvening Hero does not: ap- } pear to handle the heavy going too well. > Moutoa Treasury (R. Reed) and Llyn > Du (C. Broughton), both of whom lig- [ ure in the Heretaunga Handicap. [ slipped over six furlongs. Moutoa > Treasury forced the pace throughout. ) and then had sufficient in reserve to 1 ho id off 1,1 vn Du in the run home. * Moutoa Treasury failed at Otaki, but M the Paper Money representative might | i well show that form was all wrong. I | Llyn Du might be better favoured by ) : a larger distance. > Going May Stop Him > Potoaform (C. Broughton) went out i t(_> run six furlongs alone, but the Potoa > i gelding was stopping very badly at | the close, and should the going be > heavy his prospects under his heavy I! poundage do not look particularly > bright. Two other members of Mrs. [ McDonald's team in Blacksmith and : Magic Land were partners over live > furlongs, the former finishing in front. > Both will figure in the trial on the second day. Incidentally. Blacksmith | is doing well at the jumping branch, | and he outdistanced Llyn Du in a I round over the battens on Monday > morning. > Although BLrkbeck will not make | the trip to Hastings, Mrs. McDonald \ took through a team of eight by motor- \ lorry yesterday morning, for in addi- > tion t.o the six she will have racing at 1 Hastings, Blue Paper and Blioit were * also included. The former will come ! in at Napier Park, while Klieit will I have his schooling continued in pre- > pa ration for Trentham. I Democratic, who was to have come | in on the second day at Hastings, will ! be an absentee. L. Knapp’s candidate I j having been treated to a few days’ spell 'I in the paddock. With Birkbeck likewise an absentee, the mentor will now have the services of A. McDonald for his other candidate, Red Bank. Incidentally, the report that A. McDonald contemplates retiring from the saddle in the near future is quite without foundation, the well-known enthusiast I being too much a lover of the jumper i to drop out of the game. Riding Engagements | The following riding engagements j have been announced where Palmer- | ston North horsemen and horses are ; concerned: — A. McDonald.—Bendower, Airforce, i Red bank, Llyn Du. i R* Reed.—Arrowhead, Mothplane, j Winloeh, Moutoa Treasury. I T. Green.—L’erneru, Evening Hero, | Potoaform. A GOOD FIELD BELLS OF SHANDON’S OPPONENTS The following were the horses accepted for in the second division of the A.J.C. Nursery Handicap last Saturday, won by Mr. P. S. Gioeson’s Lord Quex gelding. Bells of Shandon: } Eulclare. 8.11: La Gloria, 8.10; Kayi toun, 8.6: Bim Boy. Tippo. 8.2: Bells of Shandon, S.O; Havanother, Great : Lady, 7JO: Royal Status. 7.7: SydenI ham, 7.5: Dango. 7.4; Lady Gwendolyn. 7.2; Kingdale, Don de Busli, 7.0; Rcdditch. 7.0: Lady Blise, 6.12: Ob- , servatory. 6.10; Light o’ Dawn, 3.7. The top-weight, the smart filly Buiclare, won the Gimcrack Stakes in the j spring, but lost it on a protest. ft ! has to be noted that Bells of Shan- ; don’s handicap weight was S.O. Acounts of the race show that Bells of Shandon, his rider hampered by losing his irons at the start, came from last to first in the straight—a remarkable performance. STEEPLECHASES ONLY Steeplechases, but no hurdle races, * figure on the programmes of America’s | principal clubs. Entries for four ! steeplechases to be run during the i month’s racing in August total 365. ; The richest steeplechase of the lot is ; the Saratoga Steeplechase Handicap, j of £3,000. two miles and a-half. The fences at Saratoga are not really stiff, j but are of the kind in which fast J jumping tells, and the pace is fast ■ throughout all the steeplechases at that I track.
