NURSES’ SALARIES

HOSPITAL BOARD DISCUSSION “It seems to me that the DirectorGeneral of Health is overstepping the mark in trying to force hospital boards to adopt a uniform rate of wages.” So said Mr. W. Wallace, chairman of tho Auckland Hospital Board, at yesterday’s meeting, when a salary scale for hospital nurses was submitted by the Director-General of Health for the board's consideration and guidance. On Mr. E. H. Potter's motion it was decided to receive the letter and to advise tho sender that the question of salaries had already been considered in Auckland. A reply was received from tl.e Director-General to the board's protest against the increase in fees for maintenance and treatment at the Government Sanatorium at Hanmc r. He said that in no case was a patient required to pay charges for a single room unless such special accommod ition had been asked for by the patient, and tho patient had signified that lie was able to pay the extra charge. “That is what we are objecting to.” said Mr. M. .T. Savage. “I will raise i the question in the House. It is bigger than appears on the surface.” I A motion of congratulation was I passed to Dr. E. B. Gunson. a member 1 of the board, upon his election as a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians.
