LAND FOR SETTLERS
ESTATE NEAR TE KUITI PURCHASE BY CROWN From Our Own Correspondent TE KUITI, Tuesday. The Lands Department has advised the member for Waitomo, Mr. W. J. Broadfoot, that the Crown has acquired the Tunnel Timber Company’s estate at Poro-o-tarao, comprising 3,300 acres, for settlement. The country is mainly plateau and easy rolling bush, well suited for combined dairy and sheep farming. One thousand acres are now carrying a splendid sole of English grasses, and it is understood that a big bush area will be felled this winter. Adjoining the latest purchase are 1,000 acres of Grown land, and also several native holdings which are to be brought before Sir Apirana Ngata’s notice, with a view to having them developed together with the Tunnel Timber estate. Situated within two miles of Poro-o-tarao railway station, on the Main Trunk line, the recently acquired property has a number of well-built cottages erected, sufficient to provide homes for every subdivision. “It is developed areas like this, contiguous to the railway, which are going to bring progress to a town like Te Kuiti,” said Mr. Broadfoot, who has personally inspected the area.
