ARRESTED FOR FOUL REMARKS NEW ARRIVAL HERE Paid off from the Kiwi tea yesterday, Joseph Armstrong started off his stay in Auckland by being arrested and convicted on two charges' in the Police Court this morning. He had followed a young woman along the street, making obscene remarks. Armstrong pleaded guilty to being found drunk in Queen Street and using obscene language. Sub-Inspector Shanahan said accused had annoyed a young woman in Queen Street at seven o’clock last evening. Accused was a stranger to her but followed her along the street using foul language. The young woman threatened to give the man in charge but he persisted in his conduct, so Constable Mackrell was called and arrested Armstrong. Nothing was previously known against him. Armstrong said he had just arrived from Australia on the Kiwitea. Fines of ss, in default 24 hours’ imprisonment on the drunkenness charge, and £2, in default seven days for the language, -were imposed. SLUMBERS DISTURBED Annoyance at having his sleep broken and being put out on the street, caused Daniel Keane to use such bad language that he appeared at the Police Court this morning and was sentenced to three months’ imprisonment. Keane, a labourer, aged 50, admitted being found drunk in Wellesley Street and using obscene language. He had nothing to say. Sub-Inspector Shanahan gave the time of the offence as 6.40 yesterday evening. Keane had visited a billiards saloon in High Street and gone to sleep there. The proprietor woke him and was putting him out when Keane used the language which he kept up until he was out on the street. “Accused has 56 convictions, and the last time he was here he got three months,” added the sub-inspector. Mr. F. K. Hunt S.M., sentenced Keane to three months’ imprisonment on the language charge.
