TALKIES AT THE NATIONAL
“HER UNBORN CHILD” A remarkable transformation is being 1 effected at the old National Theatre, Queen Street. A huge staff of electricians, builders and decorators is in charge, engaged in the task of completely renovating this popular theatre. At the same time the latest Western Electric talkie equipment is being installed so that when the National opens on Saturday next under the management of J. C. Wililamson Films, it will be one of the most up-to-date and comfortable talkie houses in Auckland. In this all-talking version of the renowned stage success, “Pier Unborn Child,” Pauline Drake appears on the screen in the identical role in which she appeared on Broadway in the stage presentation of this celebrated play. She was born in Denver, Colorado, and has resided for years in Los Angeles. Iler New York debut was made in the production of “Laff that Off,” the Larry Connors comedy triumph in which the actress drew the attention of Broadway pritics and theatre-goers. Miss Drake is by no means a newcomer to tlie screen. She has appeared in “Flight,” “The Desperado.” it nd a number of other important photoplays. Local theatre-goers will have the' opportunity of viewing Ml»s Drake’s latest screen appearance when “Her Unborn Child,” in talkie form, Is revealed at the National Theatre on Saturday. “Her Unborn Child,” which is acclaimed as the most startling talkie ever made, unfolds the poweffully dramatic and pitilessly revealing story of reckless youth and its terrible consequences.
