POTATO MARKET WEAK

POSITION IN CANTERBURY Special to THE SUN CHRISTCHURCH, Tuesday. The values for oats are weaker and although there aro quite a quantity ol' Southern oats offering:, buyers are few Mid the market very quiet. Today A grade Cartons for June delivery may be obtained at. 3s lOd f.0.b., s.i., and for spread delivery are offering at 4s, with Tio buyers. B grade has fallen in value to a corresponding extent. Chaff lias also eased slightly, in sympathy with oats, and toduy’s quotation is £ 7 2s *>d for June delivery, that is, equivalent to £5 10s to £ 5 32s 6d on trucks. Chaff for July-August-September delivery is worth a little in excess of the value quoted above. The interest in the wheat market, as far as the “free” supply is concerned, has practically concluded, and the pool Is the chief holder. There is very little business passing in nest season s Wheat, but some has taken place on the basis of 5s 6d for Tuscan, 5s Sd for Hunters and to 5s 13 d for Pearl. There is little inquiry for fowl wheat, which remains firm at 6s a. bushel, f.0.b.. sd. Actually, the price of potatoes for Prompt delivery shows an easing tendency, but there is very little quotable change in values. The: position really in a false one, as the firming which has taken place during the last week has been confined to Cashel Street, and the Auckland market, to all intents and Purposes, is over-supplied and extremely weak. If Auckland could be cleared the position would assume stability', but there does not seem any likelihood of this, with supplies still much in excess of the demand. At Present there are not many tubers offering for prompt delivery, and such are worth £3 15s a ton on trucks, While for the end of June up to £4 a ton has been paid. July's are quoted a t £5 7s 6d a ton, and July-August-September’s at £5 17s 6d a ton. with Practically no buyers in each case. The onion market continues very Jy e nk, with few offering. and very little business passing. The quotations today range either just above or below 3 a ton on trucks, according to quality.
