TRAINING FOR DEAF
SPECIAL SCHOOL WANTED ESTABLISHMENT URGED The Auckland Education Board will urge the establishment of a school for deaf children in Auckland. At a meeting this morning a deputation from the Association for the Welfare of the Deaf w r aited on the board. Mr. R. C. Macpherson described a recent meeting of parents held in the city, at which it was discovered that there were 22 deaf children in the province who were receiving no education. If a school were built, there would be 45 children available for the special classes. He asked the board to secure figures regarding those attending the school at Sumner, as these were not available to him. “Parents in Auckland whose children are at Sumner can see them for only one month of each year,” said Mr. Macpherson. Since all deaf children were required by law to attend this' schoql, it was not surprising to find that parents who did not wish to be parted from their children did not supply their names to the department, which then believed that there was no need for a school in Auckland. The technical side of the question was also dealt with. “The results achieved at Sumner are wonderful, and a similar school here is long overdue,” said Mr. A. Burns, chairman, who moved that the board refer the request to the department.
