DESTRUCTION OF WEEDS
USE OF SODIUM CHLORATE From Our Oicn Correspondent NEW PLYMOUTH, Today. The successful results obtained ty the use of sodium chlorate in the dentruction of blackberry were described by the director of the fields branch of the Department of Agriculture. Mr. J. W. Deem, in an address to farmers at Waipuku. Mr. Deem considered that the best method of dealing with blackberry was to cut the vine and sprinkle some undiluted crystals round the plants. In connection with ragwort, he said, ae would unhesitatingly advise farm€rs to spray plants at the present time aad not in the spring, as he had formerly recommended. The plants now were low and confined in nature. Th« crystals of sodium chlorate proved most effective when mixed no stronger than from 2 to 5 per cent., or not more than half a pound of crystils to a gallon of water. Solutions of up to 10 per cent, did no better work and had a tendency to affect the pasture grasses if carelessly applied. Tho slightest touch of the spray would kill ragwort within three days.
