BILLBOARDS A WORRY
‘•DANGEROUS AND UNSIGHTLY” Despairing of ever having the unsightly advertisement hoardings along the main roads removed on the score of beauty, the United States Bureau of Public Roads is now endeavouring to show that they make the roads unsafe. The bureau has asked for drastic revision of the legislations regulating billboard advertising. Dr. L. I. Hewes, engineer of the bureau, points out that the danger is
caused by the billboards obscuring the proper view of drivers using the roads, and is worst where the traffic is heaviest, as at these points the offending signs are so close together as to have the effect of a high, continuous fence. The danger lies not only in the view being obscured, but also in the confusion caused to drivers hy the various advertisements which blanket warning and traffic signs. It is held that while the authorities are straining every effort to make motoring safer and more pleasant, little can he done in this direction while roads are made dangerous and unsightly by these eyesores.
