STRAND
‘THE GIRL FROM WOOLWQRTH’S’
Dialogue as she is spoke. A whiff of fresh plot ideas. Legs. Curves. Good music, good singing, clever lines. That describes “The Girl From Woolworth’s,” which is heading a good bill at the Strand Theatre. But it doesn’t halfway describe the genuine enjoyment you’re going to get from this First National and Vitaphone offering, because we haven't mentioned Alice White, the dynamic little star of the piece, and the rest of a really great cast. Always identified with dramatic, serious roles. Evelyn Brent has reached a high point in her brilliant moving picture career in her latest co-starring Paramount all-talking vehicle “Slightly Scarlet,” which is also being shown at the Strand. In “Slightly Scarlet,” as in the smashing success, “Interference,” Miss Brent plays opposite Clive Brook. Miss Brent has been called the “queen of melodramas,” and “Slightly Scarlet” is a tense, dramatic, highlyadventurous, romantic melodrama. The story unfolds in handsome surroundings with one unusual twist after another. Miss Brent, famous on the screen for the beauty of her clothes, in “Slightly Scarlet,” wears many new creations which admirably set off her gorgeous dark beauty. On Friday an entirely new programme will be presented at the Strand in “Hearts in Exile,” a powerful dramatic tale of love, hate, revenge, and aristocracy in Russia and Siberia. Dolores Costello, star of “Hearts in Exile,” is one of the most beautiful and popular of screen stars. Since the advent of the talking picture her popularity has increased immensely, for her voice is clear and musical, entirely in keeping with her exquisite beauty and sweet personality. In “Hearts in Exile” she emerges as a new Dolores, more alluring than ever. Her other recent pictures are “Madonna of Avenue A,” “The Glad Rag Doll,” and “Noah’s Ark.” Clara Bow' is a good athlete, but not an expert. She likes hiking, swimming, and horseback riding. She handles any make of motor-car, and dances well.
