JOCKEYS' MOUNTS
HORSEMEN FOR SOUTHERN MEETINGS HASTINGS AND HAWERA The Ellerslie hurdle jockey. R. Olive, whose weight does not permit him doing a great deal of riding, is assured of a busy time shortly. tie has contracted to ride at Hastings, Hawera and Waipa—three meetings all withiti a few days of one another. Olive commences at Hastings on Friday and he has the one ride, the Gisborne-trained Kongo, who made n promising display among hack hurdlers at Ellerslie recently. On Wednesday week Olive will be at Hawera for the Egmont-Wanganui Hunt meeting, and there he will have the mount on Just John. This meeting will be followed by the Waipa fixture at T© Awamutu on Saturday week, and Olive has already been engaged for Roger and Lucilius. H. Wiggins also intends being present at Hawera to ride Hopwood. At this same meeting last year Wiggins won a double on Hopwood. J. Mcßae journeys to Hastings t:*r the riding of Sir Moment. A.R.C. CLASSICS INCREASE IN THREE-YEAR-OLD EVENTS Following are details of the classic entries received by the Auckland Racing Club last Friday, with those for June, 1929, given for comparison:
While the aggregate represents a satisfactory increase, it is noticeable that there is a small decrease in the number of entries for each of the twp-year-old races to be run during the coming season and also for the Royal Stakes. On the other hand, entries for the three-year-old classics to be run in the 1931-32 season are in each instance larger than those received a year ago. MILLION AND A-QUARTER TOTALISATOR INVESTMENTS AT HOME British Official Wireless RUGBY, Sunday. Sines January 1, £1,250,000 worth of betting' has been handled by the totalisator which has now been installed by the Racecourse Betting Control Board, or is in course of construction, on 74 racecourses in England. The board claims that the chief purpose of the totalisator-—namely, to attract more people to the races—has been achieved. On 113 racing days this year at 63 meetings the attendances were greater by an average of 39 per cent, than those of last year. BACK FROM SPELL ELLERSLIE After a few months’ absence from the race track the three-year-old Pellette has been recommissioned under the direction of W. H. Patterson at Ellerslie. Previously trained at Talsapuna by F. J. Smith, the filly proved a winner under this mentor, opening her account as a two-year-old on the occasion *of the Ohinemuri Jockey Club’s annual meeting fifteen months ago, when sh<* beat the speedy Awamutu by four lengths. Pellette has always been endowed with great pace, but she does not run on too 'well. Perhaps she will do better next season.
TARANAKI TEAM TO TOUR The exodus of INew Zealand trainers to Australia continues. The latest to announce his intention of visiting the Commonwealth is the New Plymouth owner-trainer, R. Johnson, who will leave by the first available boat with a team of four horses, The Sw-ell Ridgemount and two others.
