FIFTH FUNCTION IN LEWIS EADY HALL A very enjoyable time was spent on Wednesday evening, when the fifth dance of the Monte Carlo Dance Society of Selected Musicians was held in the Lewis Eady Hall. Among those present were: Airs. J. T. Boyle, who wore cornflower blue georgette and taffeta hip bow; Mrs. F. Coupland, mauve georgette, diamente trimming; Mrs. O. Coupland, black taffeta and lace: Mrs. W. H. Mardle. flame georgette with uneven hem, and diamente trim miner; Miss B. Bees, sunkist satin and georgette; Miss Jean Alexander, blue satin and lace Miss Linda Ramsay, rose pink lace over silk lame: Miss Rene Ryan, shot lemon taffeta with uneven hem: Miss Ira Ardley. puce taffeta; Miss T. 'Wilson, ivorv headed satin and georgette: Miss Gwen Harris, ivorv satin and white georgette- Aliss Mavis MacDonald. floral ninon: Miss I. Ward, black crepe de chine embroidered with roses: Miss A . WOMEN’S INSTITUTE MEETING OF BRANCHES The first monthly meeting of the Taupiri Branch of the Women’s Institute was held in the Taupiri Hall on the Wednesday afternoon. The hostesses for the occasion j Mesdames Clarke, Farrington, \v ll- i liam-s and Smith. There were about forty women present, quite a large number of new members being enrolled. Representatives from Orini, Tlenry Soldier Settlement, Komakorau and Kainui, attended. Upon this occasion the roll call was answered with a motto, the most suitable being chosen as that of the branch,— “Unity is Strength.” The minutes of the previous meeting when the Institute was formed, were read and other business dealt with. A vocal item was given by Mrs. Vollemaere. accompanied by Aliss Charles. . . - A competition, the distinguishing o»various spices by recognising their scent, was won by Airs. Tappier. During the dispensing of afternoon tea Airs. Holt of Ngaruawahia, enter- j tained with pianoforte solos AI AT AAXAT A BRANCH The usual meeting was held this week Airs. L. Ryan presiding over a good attendance. A new programme arranged by Mesdames G. G. Bell, L nderwood, Lambourne, Alateer. Crowther and Stubbing, was submitted and adopted. _ _ j Five new members. Alesdames Aiquist, Finlay son, McDonald, Alclntj re and E. Robertson, were elected. The Wellington Dominion Conference was discussed and Airs. Ryan appointed as delegate. Afternoon tea was served by Mesdames J. Buchanan, A. Johnson, Alateer and Turkington, after which a most interesting demonstration of the making of pouffes, liumpties and liatboxes from cheese crates was given by the president. . . The competition of surprise parcels resulted in £1 2s being added to the funds. Several gramophone records were plaved during the afternoon, and the singing of the National Anthem closed the meeting. WAIXGARO MEETING The monthly meeting of the Waingaro Women’s Institute was held at Airs. Warrow’s residence. There was a full attendance, Mrs. Picken presiding. Business in connection with the Dominion conference, the A\ inter Show the Manufacturers’ Association and the League of Nations occupied the greater part of the time. The president was elected a delegate to the Dominion conference, to be held in 'Wellington in October. It has been arranged td hold an open social evening in the Public Hall in July, the proceeds to go to the institute’s general fund. It is hoped that Aliss Melville will be present to lecture on New Zealand-made goods on behalf of the Auckland Manufacturers* Association.
Airs. Darrow and Ali-s. Barter were hostesses for the afternoon.
PLAY READ AT OTAKIRI MEETING
The monthly meeting of the Otakirl ; Women’s Institute was held in the local i hall recently. Airs, lveir was in the chair. A play, which was much enjoyed, was read by four of the members. The hostesses were Mesdames W. Murray, Hallett and Ranby. A competition was judged and the meeting ended with community singing. RESIGNATION OF SECRETARY AT GLEN EDEN The Glen Eden Women's Institute met last week. The resignation of Airs. Kerr, secretary, owing to illness, was received with regret, and Airs. Laurie was appointed in her place, with Airs. Hardiman as treasurer. Airs. Huyton, president, was chosen as a delegate to the forthcoming institute conference to be held at Wellington. After business matters had been dealt with the meeting became an open one, and Air. Jones, W.E.A., gave a lecture upon “The Glory of the Heavens.” This was much enjoyed by the audience. Supper was served by Airs. Huyton and Airs. Laurie. BAND AT INFIRMARY INMATES ENTERTAINED A thoroughly enjoyable programme of band music was presented to the inmates of the Epsom Infirmary last evening by the Onehunga Citizens’ Band in response to a request bv the Onehunga branch of the Auckland Hospital Auxiliary. Under the baton of Bandmaster A. Leather by, a variety of marches, popular operatic and sacred selections from “Vanished Away,” “Pirates of Penzance,” “Alaid of Orleans,” “Musical Switch,” “Abide With Me,” and “Nearel* My God to Thee,” were received with the hearty applause of the old folk. A cornet duet by Alessrs W. Rafferty and A. Wilson and a cornet solo by Air. B. W h it combe were also keenly appreciated. Aliss Hawkins was the pianist. At the conclusion of the concert, Air. Robert Foster, on behalf of the inmates, thanked the band for its performance.
