ST. JAMES
“DISRAELI” An English actor, George Arliss, has the leading role in “Disraeli,” a Warner Brothers’ production, which is continuing its successful season at the St. James Theatre. Disraeli, one of the fascinating figures of last century, the wit, the women’s favourite, the keen and farseeing diplomat, who survived the jeers, racial prejudices and ancient traditions to become England’s Prime Minister, is presented with all the traits of his character fully illustrated. He is first shown as the conservative Prime Minister, hampered in his office by lack of finances and power. While Russia is casting envious eyes on the Suez Canal and has her spies engaged in England, Disraeli attempts to persuade the Bank of England to advance the funds for the purchase of the canal until Parliament meets and approves of the plan. The bank refuses to do so and at the same time Disraeli learns that one of his secretaries is the husband of a society woman who proves to be a spy. From these complications Disraeli succeeds in proving his genius and accomplishing his task. Interwoven is a strong love story concerning the winning of Lady Clarissa, a great admirer of Disraeli, by Lord Deeford.
