Wrackler’s Sister
SAPLING STAKES RECORD Fast Trotting at Ashburto 1 ’ FAILURE OF FAVOURITES Special to THE SIS S ASHBURTON, Saturday. ON a good track Arethusa, full-sister to the mighty Wrackler, wan the Sapling Stakes in fine style, registering 3.25 3-5, a record for tlie classic contest, and also an Australasian record. Despite her smart performance of a few weeks back the Durban Lodge representative was only third in order of favouritism. Red Shadow and Goldwortliy being more solidly supported.
Despite dull, cold weather, the attendance was fairly large, but the totalizator business suffered a decrease of £4.365. The monotonous regularity with which favourites failed to materialise had a detrimental effect on speculation. Only one first fancy succeeded in pulling backers through. The machine handled £ 15,426, against £22,791 last year.
Gold Country, a three-year-old by Key de Oro from Country Belle, winner of the New Zealand Cup of 1915, and holder of a 2.7 1-5 and 4.22 4-5 record, was the only favourite to score, winning, the Trial in impressive fashion to register 3.31 2-5 from a 3.45 mark. Merrijigs, an ex-Alborn candidate, which repeatedly let his party down, created a surprise by going well enough to win the mile and a-half trot by a narrow margin. O. E. Hooper produced Great Logan in line order to win the big heat. Whakataua again proved his worth by scoring comfortably over 12 furlongs, and Trimmer, long overdue, came to light in the second leg of the double. A Good Youngster According to the public Gold Country was the only horse in the Trial Handicap, and the three-year-old never left the issue in doubt, once heads were turned for home. Ho raced greenly at his first appearance, going all over the track in the run home, but he was so far ahead of Glenvilie that his meandering caused no bother to the latter. Glenville, giving away 48yds on a handicap of 3.41, was unlucky enough to go 3.28 and get beaten. Princess Thea was only a poor third, and the others wero out of it. Author Willings, Zane and Cora Locanda lost their chances at the start. Merrijigs at Last Merrijigs went away galloping in the Longbeach Handicap, but once he settled down went to the front and in a fighting finish just lasted long enough to beat the galloping Quincey Thorpe by a head. The latter galloped practically the whole of the last furlong, and at a meeting of stewards
end of the Winter Handicap to boat Shady Spot and Warepa in a Ifcperfinish. Trimmer has always been a speedy customer, and in addition to holding a two-mile record of 4.26 2-5. lie has some line sprint efforts to his credit. Warepa tried to win all the way, only failing in the last furlong but there was little merit in the performance. Nelson de Oro and Bay nut were in the picture throughout, but faded over the business end. Royal Comrade and John Jinks were among those that lost their chances at the start. A Speedy Pacer The Farewell was easy for Country King at the finish. Erin’s Lynn, Harley Dillon and Tannhauser stood on the mark, and Happy Land (the favourite) was slow away. Wild Spur led out. but broke at the end of a furlong, and Kinney Dillon led to the far turn from Kautoma, Country King, Tumatakuru and Happy Land. Kinney Dillon led into the straight from Kautoma, Country King, Happy Land. Tumatakuru, Brook Pointer and Mac Dillon. Country King then drew out to win by half a length from Kinney Dillon, with Brook Pointer four lengths away third just in front of Mac Dillon. Then came Tumatakuru and Kautoma. The winner registered 2.13 1-5 from a 2.1 S mark, a smart performance. Results are as follow: Trial Handicap, of £150; 11 miles; 3.45 limit.—l Gold Country (W. J. Morland), limit, M.
