ASSAULTED MAN BECOMES ABUSIVE WOULD NOT GO HOME Criticising the methods of two constables whom he had called in for assistance, Guy Carney became abusive and was, himself arrested. He *was fined a total of £2 in the Police Court this morning. 1 Carney, a seaman. aged 25. admitted being disorderly while drunk in Queen Street on Saturday, but said he could not remember using indecent language. The offences, Sub-Inspector Shanahan said, were committed at 6.40 on Saturday evening. Constable Smith said he and another constable were stopped in Queen Street by accused, who complained that he had. been assaulted in a billiards saloon. They went to the saloon but Carney, who was very drunk, said they were not going fast enough, and became very abusive. A crowd collected and he used the language stated in the charge. Carney, whoso mouth was badly lacerated and blood-stained, had nothing to say. “He has not been here for a year.” put in the magistrate, when the sub-inspector produced accused’s list. “He came here from America two years ago and has been in and out of court ever since.” said Chief-Detective Hammond. “He served a term in the United States Navy.” Carney was fined £1 on each charge in default a total of six days’ imprisonment. Accused was also ordered to pay medical expenses, 10s 6d, and cab fare, 2s 6d.
