HIGH SUCCESS GAINED | Successful candidates from the Rich- '■ mond Nautical School, for certificates ] issued by the Marine Department, since the list in April, are:—Master, foreign- ! going, and special signal test, Mr. H. I Ruegg; honorary certificate of efficiency for officers of the Royal Naval j Volunteer Reserve, Mr. R. S. Cameron: i first mate, foreign-going (square rig). ! * Mr. D. E. Champion, at Wellington-! • partial passes in signals, Mr. H. Ruegg j I (grade, extra master, foreign-going). ! j Mr. C. A. Barker (grade, first mate, i foreign-going), Mr. R. B. Gunnill ! j (grade, second mate, foreign-going). ( j The success of Mr. Cameron, a lieu- ! tenant of the Auckland Division of the R.X.V.R.. in winning the first certificate of its kind granted in New Zeai land, is exceptional. The standard of his examination was the same as that for master, foreign-going, and there were papers in nautical astronomy, navigation, great circle sailing, trigonometry, naval architecture, magnetism, ship’s stability, compass adjustments, and meteorology. The percentage required to pass is 75. and. in addition, there is an oral ezeamination in seamanship.
