BUS HITS TRAIN
LEVEL-CROSSING SMASH PASSENGERS’ CLOSE CALL HAMILTON, Today. A level-crosing’ accident occurred at Newstead at 7 p.m. on Saturday, when the Kiwi bus, owned by A. L. A. Dent. Te Aroha, travelling from Hamilton to Te Aroha. collided with tlie train which left Cambridge at G p.m. , It is stated that the train was hidden from the bus driver by the Newstead Hall, while visibility was made bad by the lights of an approaching car. Acting with extreme promptitude, the driver jammed on the brakes in time to prevent a terrific smash. The bus struck the train and slewed around sideways and plunged into a low ditch. Fortunately, it did not capsize and the damage was confined to a wrecked radiator and smashed windscreen. Mr. D. Wright, of Hamilton, a member of the Marist football team, was thrown heavily inside the bus and injured his shoulder slightly, while a woman passenger suffered shock.
