SCUFFLE WITH POLICE
VIOLENT MAORI PRISONER SENSATION AT HAMILTON From Our Own Correspondent HAMILTON, Today. A sensation was caused outside the courthouse today when a Maori, NYhare Matangi. was being escorted to ihe lockup after being sentenced to two years’ hard labour and being declared an habitual criminal. Prisoner threw his hat on the ground in a temper and then broke ; way from the police. He was trippedup and handcuffed, after a violent .-iruggle with several warders and policemen. The Maori yelled wildly . nd said he did not care if he were hanged. Mr. Justice Herdman had just told prisoner that the majority ot‘ his race were a law-abiding people. JTe read prisoner's list showing convictions for theft, horse-stealing, assault causing actual bodily harm, carnal knowledge, attempted carnal knowledge and attempted rape.
