FIRE AT WAIHI
MUCH DAMAGE DONE GOOD WORK BY BRIGADE From Our Own Correspondent WAIHI, Today. Fire gutted most of a two-storey wood and iron business building in Rosemont Road last evening, and did many hundreds of pounds worth of damage to stocks of various occupants. The building, which was owned by Mrs. M. Berridge, 2 Arthur Street, Ponsonbyy was insured for £SOO in the New Zealand Office. The fire broke out in the grocery premises of H. Carbutt, ruining his stock, and also the stores upstairs, spreading thence into the adjoining storeroom of F. Timanus, hardware dealer. The contents of this room, which included a number of motortyres, were also destroyed. The shop beneath suffered from the smoke and water. In R. T. Toomey’s boot shop on the other side of Carbutt’s store the stock did not suffer much, but the workshoj) at the back was affected by smoke and water. The insurances held by the occupants were all in the New Zealand; Office, and are as follow:—Timanus, | £1,000; Toomey, £235; Carbutt, £2OO. There is nothing to show how the fire started, and no reason to suspect that anybody had been on the premises beforehand. A high wind was blowing at the time, and great credit is due to the Waihi Fire Brigade for preventing the fire spreading to other business premises.
