WINTER TIPS THAT BRING SUCCESS

When clumps of herbaceous perennials are being divided for replanting, remember that the younger and more vigorous portions are found on the outside. The old centres should be discarded. Herbaceous phloxes will succeed in sunless borders, but do best where they get sunshine, provided they can also enjoy a cool and comparatively moist root-run. All plants needing greenhouse protection should be now safely inside, as after this date sudden frosts are quite likely. PRUNING FRUIT BUSHES As soon as the leaves drop, the pruning of currants and gooseberries should be carried out. This is a very disagreeable job during really cold weather. All primings should be at once collected and burned. PLANTING FRUIT TREES This can be carried out now. It is wise to give it early attention. Do not plant if the soil is very wet, and do not plant too deeply. Thoroughly break up any new site, and drain the ground if it is inclined to be waterlogged. Make the ground around new trees thoroughly firm. LIFTING MAIN CROP CARROTS Just when these are ready to lift depends much on when they were sown, but if the roots are of a fair size lift them, as with increasing moisture in the ground they may split Cut off the tops, and clamp them in a dry, cool place, out of doors, in sand, until wanted. In sandy formations there is little risk of splitting.
