DEDICATED TO AUCKLAND
WHAT SUN VILLA EMBODIES MODEL HOME ADAPTED TO OUR CLIMATE WITH the co-operation of Auckland firms, THE SUN is dedicating: a superior residence to the people of Auckland. It will be the excellent villa dwelling-, valued at much above £2,000. The equity, which is 'worth over £I,OOO. is offered as first prize in THE SUN Popularity Campaign'. Embodying' new and carefully-planned features in its desig-n, the one and a-ha.lf storey home may be taken as a model dwelling for Auckland.
Not in its attractiveness and worth alone will this residence be of importance. It will represent high ideals in New Zealand home construction, a product of the co-operation of leading concerns, a possibility of easy financing, and an example of the success of New Zealand auanufacturcs. In every possible way. New Zealand products and manufactures are to be used in this home. Then there is the knowledge tc* be gained from a study of this home that it represents an endeavour to make available to Aucklanders a dwelling ideally suited to the particular demands of the Auckland climate. This has been a foremost consideration with the architect, Mr. 11. Clinton Savage. It is patently clear that the present time, when New Zealand manufactures for house construction and fitting have modern standards in every way, is when home designs should be suited definitely to the climate, or climates, of this country. It is now being recognised that it is useless merely to copy the house types of other countries. Many “open” styles of dwelling which have been introduced to this country have been found to be totally unfit, for the changes of climate. Mr. Savage has devoted much attion to this aspect, and the valuable residence which The Sun is offering free to the competitor with the greatest number of votes in the Popularity Campaign will be found to have the virtues resulting from this expert study. The house will be snugly warm against the questing winds of winter; in summer, its rooms will be fresh. AncT then, there is a spacious sun porch provided for on the northern side. It will catch the warmth of the summer sun. The villa will be a house built essentially for Auckland. HIGH, DRY SITE With a frontage of 50 feet to Dominion Road, in the AVinstone Park Estate, the villa will be on a high, dry site, with a pleasing view over the residential lands wedged between the volcanic peaks of Auckland, and over the Akarana golf links, immediately at the rear of the 174 ft-deep section. The villa will have a brick base. Steeltex walls, supplied by Winstone, Ltd., with a stucco exterior, and a tiled roof. The Amalgamated Brick and Pipe Co., Ltd., will supply* the brick and floor quarries.
The design of the villa is an adaptation of English domestic architecture. A mellow suggestion will be given by an amount of half-timbered work. It is generally accepted that the one and a-half storey type of dwelling is most suitable to Auckland. It is becoming increasingly popular and has many advantages over bungalow dwellings.
