MODERN FASHIONS AND SLENDER ANKLES

SOME “SLIMMING” EXERCISES

It is said, with some truth, that the playing of strenuous games has produced ankles which are less shapely than modern “feminine” frocks seem to demand. But, just as the ankles become thickened through playing games, so do they become slim again if they are gently coaxed by judicious exercise.

, The following exercises which may be practised just before retiring at night are most beneficial: (1.) Stand with right leg extended, the toe of foot well pointed to the floor and coming immediately in line with left foot. Then, keeping the leg stiff, make a wide sweeping semicircle with pointed toe, .finishing on tip toe directly in line with the heel of left foot. Repeat with left foot. Until you become accustomed to this exercise, it may be necessary to seek the aid of a chair; while exercising with right leg, hold firmly to chanback with left hand; then, of course, reverse.

(2.) With hands on hips, head well up, march round' the room, “goosestep” fashion. At each lift of the leg point toe to the floor. This exercise, simple though it seems, is one of the most effective. (3.) Sit with leg extended (at a comfortable height from floor), holding knee with hands. Then, with well pointed toe, perform a slow rotary movement from right to left. Reverse from left to right. Do this with both feet alternately. After these exercises have been done several times, your ankles will probably ache just a little. Therefore bind each round three or four times with a piece of crepe bandage three and a-half inches wide, commencing from the inside of the ankle and working outward.
