SEPARATING COLLEGES
OPINIONS OF SIR GEORGE FOWLDS
COMMENT IN CANTERBURY
From Our Oicn Correspondent CHHISTCHURCH, Today. “It is an important question, and I still remain strongly of the opinion
that the sooner the movement comes to a head the better,” said the rector of Canterbury College, Ur. J. Might, yesterday when asked to discuss Sir George Fowld’s reference to the proposal to have four separate universities or the incorporation of the North Island university colleges into a University of North New Zealand.
“The proposal has been advocated for Victoria and Auckland Colleges for some time,” continued Ur. Hight, “and I remember a discussion in Christchurch some four or five years ago on the question whether the existing colleges should be made universities. In my opinion the change would not involve any additional expense, for the revenue of the present New Zealand University would be divided among the four universities constituted, and a great deal of its administrative expenditure cancelled.” Hr. Might said he preferred the establishment of four universities, at Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch and Dunedin, to the establishment of two, in the North and South Islands.
