TEST PROSPECTS
HOME CRITIC DISPELS ENGLISH OPTIMISM AUSTRALIAN CRICKETERS Reed. 10.15 a.m. LONDON, Thurs. A. C. Mac Daren, writing in the “Evening Standard’’ on the test chances, says despite the fact that the visitors have been severely tried by wet and cold, no English side has yet been victorious against the Australians. “Friends keep on reminding me that Australia has no bowlers,” he adds, “but to this I reply that their bowlers appear to be dismissing the English sides, and I ask how many centuries have been made against Australia, while a bagful of centuries has been made against the English bowlers on bad wickets? “Personally, I think Grimmett is quite 30 per cent, better than ever.” MacLaren proceeds in strong praise of Bradman, adding a prediction of his that the more recent smaller scores will all favour Australia tomorrow. “It is my view,” he says, “that Australia will prove the better bowling side, though I consider our batsmen collectively stronger.” The Australian cricketers left Downside for Nottingham, where great excitement prevails on the eve of the first test.
