NEW LIEUT.-GOVERNOR GOES TO MALTA
POLITICAL TENSION THERE British Official Wireless Reed. 11.35 a.m. RUGBY, Thurs. The King has approved the. appointment of Mr. Harry Luke, Chief Secretary in Palestine, to be LieutenantGovernor of Malta, in succession to Sir Thomas Best, who has been appointed Governor of Windward Island. It was upon Mr. Luke that the responsibility fell of coping with the crisis in Palestine created by the disturbances of last year, when Sir John Chancellor, the High Commissioner, was absent on leave. Mr. Luke now goes to Malta to assist General Sir John Ducane, the Governor, in the highly intricate situation which has developed there in connection with the relations with the Vatican. STRIFE AT FEVER-HEAT THREATS OF BIG THINGS Reed. 1 ;p.m. MALTA, Thursday. The political and religious situation is growing worse daily. The clergy are actively fighting what they term the Government’s anti-religious policy. Religious organs are joining in the campaign. They declare the past is nothing. Big things are yet to come.
