TRIP TO COROMANDEL

TRUSTING TAXI-DRIVER LOSES £9 SEAMAN FOR SENTENCE .Having passed two valueless cheques and obtained a free trip to Coromandel by telling a taxi-driver that he was employed by a Wellington firm, Ralph Fergus Cahill appeared at the Police Court this morning and was remanded for sentence for a week. Cahill, a seaman, aged 24, pleaded guilty to obtaining credit by fraud to the extent of £9 from Hartley Stoncliffe on May 11. He also admitted obtaining shoes valued at 23s 5d and £2 4s 9d in money on May 27, and £1 on May 8, by means of valueless cheques. Chief-Detective Hammond said Cahill had persuaded the taxi-driver to take him to Coromandel b.v telilng him he was an employees of a large motor firm. He haci obtained £1 as an advance on a cheque from a tobacconist in Newmarket. Another amount had been paid as deposit on a £3OO car at Pukekohe. H© had not taken the car away. Cahill had three previous convictions for theft. At the request of the probation officer Cahill was remanded for a week for sentence.
