South Island Finals

GOOD FIELDS AT ASHBURTON Trotting Season Almost Over THE trotting season in the South Island will terminate tomorrow with the staging of the Asburtou winter fixture —a popular one-day meeting which never fails to draw good fields and provide fine sport. It is the final function prior to the Auckland carnival the following week and the form of horses likely to come North will be watched with interest in this province.

One of the most interesting features about the Ashburton winter card is the contest for the Sapling Stakes, the two-vear-old blue riband of the Dominion. ‘ This is the only event staged for the special benefiit of the youngsters and it adds greatly to the attractiveness of the fixture. The acceptances received for tomorrow’s card are on the large side, while in some of the items the quality of the contestants is of a high class standard. A review of the fields by “Abaydos” follows: Trial Handicap Sixteen pacers of varying stages of progress appear in the opening event, and off the front mark is a baker’s dozen. It is likely the winner is concealed in the limit brigade, and anything on this line that can hop out smartly will be in demand. Author Willings is mentioned as one that should obtain a proficiency ticket before long, and Clapham, Desert Ray, and Logan Fraser have been expected to show up before the season ended. Of those in the rearguard, Glenville and Great de Oro make most appeal. The latter is a solid customer that may make light of his handicap. Backers may rely upon Author Willings and Desert Rey. Longbeach Handicap Sixteen is again the number carded for the improving square-gaiters’ item, but there will be a bracket with the promising three-year-olds Lough Guy and Kilbirnie Dan. This pair finished together behind White Satin at Dunedin in the Trotting Stakes. They figure on the 36 yards mark from where they should have a reasonable chance. Of the front liners, Enigma, Merrijigs and Pattie Bingen will be in demand, while Lucky Voyage will have friends. Esbine off 48 will be showing up at the business end, while Kitty Patch. Great Burton and Micky Audubon are solid trotters. When backers get busy they may go soundly for the Lough Guy—Kilbirnie Dan bracket and Pattie Bingen. Ashburton County Handicap There are fourteen acceptors for the main event of the day, in which class is well represented. Pluto, Linkman and Sunshower, who all figure in the big race at Auckland the following Sat-

urday, are included in the field. Pluto is on 4.30, and has a placed record of 4.24 4-3, and Linkman (4.24) and Sunshower (4.27 4-3) are on 4. 27. For their Epsom engagement this lot are at one point better off in the handicaps. The front line presents a tough proposition in Arikitoa, Great Logan, Huon Denver and- Wrackeen. Great Logan recently won at ten furlongs, Huon Denver ran a good third at Oamaru, while Wrackeen was in the money each day at Forbury. Omaha has a good show off 4.30, but Muriel de Oro reads better at that handicap. The Shrew has been showing up of late, Athalone is a solid chap, while Trampfast if dressed in his best, will take a lot of beating. There may be most support for Muriel de Oro and Wrackeen, but if the latter is kept for the sprint, Trampfast will be in demand. Acton Handicap Again sixteen is the acceptance tallv, and this time the field is full of possibilities. Of the front rankers, Kantoma and Baby Logan are useful, while just behind them is Erin’s Lynn, Mac Dillon and Lydia. In her home town the last named may do better than at Dunedin. Editor, Wild Voyage. Regal Voyage and Whakatana are recent winners that will go a good race. Regal Voyage scored two on end at Forbury Park. Aleron has a rare quantity of speed, but may be short of a race. Vecto has good form to recommend him, and when the machine closes, best backed may be Regal Voyage and Lydia. Stewards’ Handicap Sixteen is indeed the popular number with the acceptance list, as the tallv for the two-mile square-gaiters also reaches that total. Of the limit contingent Mat Voyage will have friends, but Repeta Mac will probably be in solid demand. King’s Voyage and Wattle Patch are recent winners, while Repute has been in the money, but she is not too solid. Scuttle is a big possibility, while Tot Logan and Fifa are a useful pair, and the latter wll be given preference with backers, as her form this season has been good. Gemlight has been in the money in the last three starts and will again go a sound race. There should be a good pool, with most money for Fifa and Wattle Patch. Winter Handicap The biggest fio.d of the day promises to parade for this ten furlong item, and half the runners are on the limit mark. If right Apex would lead the oppostion a merry dance, and Royal Comrade, with a favourable dispatch

will take a lot of heading off. Great Triumph has plenty of speed. John Jinks will have a host of admin** Nelson de Oro, Shady Spot. Nelson McElwyn and Warepa have ail been recently in a place, and the same applies to Kotuku Jack and Rey Logan and the last mentioned should be handv at the finish. Avenger and Granite City are handily placed and the back markers. Pluto and Wrackeen are

speedy at this journey. They claim an earlier engagement. The chief fancies may be Rey Logan and Wrackeen, but if the latter is missing John Jinks will appeal. Farewell Handicap

Fifteen accepted for the final event of the day, which is a popular one, being contested in saddle. Fight' are arrayed on the first line, and some smart milers can be sighted here. Happy Land was twee second at Oamaru, Kinney Dillon is fast out of the slips, and Wild Spur and Tannhauser have both won races with the weight on top. The remainder will start from 12 yards and in Harold Lee, Country King, Young Bingen and Tumatakuru, there is a useful quartet for backers to think about. If Country King adapts himself to this style of the business he will be a tough proposition, but the actual favourites may be Harold Lee and Happy Land. -| -| Oi\ TRIAL handicap
