RAILWAYS EARNINGS
THIS YEAR’S FIRST RETURNS WORKING PROFIT INCREASE From Our Resident Reporter WELLINGTON, Today. The Railway’ Department’s working accounts for the first four weeks, ended April 26, of the present financial year, show a working profit of £122,270. For the corresponding period last year the working profit was £107.365. and for that of 1928, £130,221. The variations may’ be attributed to the incidence of Easter, which fell last year in March and in 1928 and 19S0 in April. The gross earnings were £640,590 and the expenses £511.320. Both are higher than last year, the former by £22.173 and the latter by £7.279. The working profit in the North Island was £51,758. an increase of £6,504: that in the South Island was £41.012, a reduction of £973. Revenue from services other than railway operating shows an excess over expenditure of £ 29,500. which is £9.374 more than in the corresponding period last year.
