FRIENDLY SOCIETIES’ CHAMPIONSHIP PROGRAMME FOR YEAR The Ponsonby Drill Hall p re- ! sented quite an animated appearance on Saturday, when 132 competitors of the Auckland Friendly Societies' Indoor Bowling Association met to decide which would be the champion team for the season 1930. President Bro. Frank Harris we’.- j coined the members, and gave an out- ! line of the programme for 193 C. He | reminded members of the pairs tourney, entries for which close on June 19. and the open fours tourney, ertries ! for which close on Thursday, July 17. ' For the open fours tourney, in addition to the four silver cups for winners and runners-up. a handsome : banner has been donated by R. G. Cox. ! Esq. This banner can only be held by a : team representing some recognised ledge or club. In the event, of the winners of the open fours not being eligible to hold the banner, it would go to. the next team that was eligible. Six rounds were played on Saturday. and five more will be played next Saturday. A very high standard of play was in evidence. As some compe- | titors have had a bye. and only played five games to others’ six, the progress scores as published below d) not give an exact indication of the placings: Section A.—Birkenhead (.Blackwell), 7 wins: L.L.O.L. Ponsonby, Birkenhead (Copeland), each 1 win. C Section. —Eden B (Francis), Birkenhead (Harkin). each 5 wins; Victoria, 4 wins; Henderson. 35 wins; City of Auckland, 3 wins: Hope of Auckland. Carr Memorial. Aroatea, L.L.O.L. (Speir), each. 2 wins; L.L.O.L. (Simpson), 1 win; ellerslie. Next Saturday may see many changes among the leading teams, and the position is still full of interest. each case the challenger was noi successful. Results were:—Hayes 4, > Harris 6: and Bolton 6, v. Harris 7. In the last game the challenger unfortunate enough when the game vas practically won to carelessly d* liver his last bowl and give the gam* to his opponent, by taking kitty off the mat.
