Association Vacancy.—The vacancy on th© Auckland Hockey Association executive caused by the resignation of Mr. T. Giles, of St. Duke’s, through transfer to Wellington, has been filled by the election of Mr. T. Clark, the well-known St. Luke’s halfback. Players Transferred.—The association has approved the following transfers of players: Second grade, F. Blair. University to Somerville: V. R. Smytheman, Papatoetoe to Somerville: senior grade, A. S. Don, Grammar to St. Luke’s. * * * Referees’ Association.—The Referees' Association appears to be much stronger this- winter than last, a number of young men having come forward to assist with the whistle. Several are undergoing examinations, and last evening 20 sat for tests in theory The standard of refereeing, which is sometimes a matter of comment by players, does not now leave much room for complaint, taken generally—isn’t that a fact? A little appreciation now

and then is the due of these men, who come out Saturday after Saturday to put through the most thankless job in the world, sole selectors excluded.

White Horse Cup Tourney.—The annual tournament for country players will begin at- Remuera on Monday July 14. Entries close with the Auckland Hockey Association on July 1 Although no entries have actually come forward as yet, there is reason to believe that the number of teams competing will be well up to the high level of recent years. This time it is likely that the annual Country v. Town match will go by the board, perhaps for the first time in the history of the fixture. The reason is that the British Rugby team will meet Auckland on the final day of Country Week, July 19, and most players will want to see the footballers in action. The decision of the association to abandon the match would be appreciated universally, this column ventures to predict. * * * The Dominion Shield.—The secretary to the Auckland Hockey Association. Mr. E. J. Hewitt, announces that he has sent forward a challenge on behalf of Auckland for the Dominion Challenge Shield now held by Canterbury. Mr. Hewitt says that the first match of the shield series will be played between Otago and Canterbury some time before June 28. Wellington has also challenged, and will play the winner of the above fixture, the

date not being known. Auckland, of course, will oppose the victor of the second round. By staying the challenge as long as possible, Auckland has done a shrewd thing, for the chances are that Wellington may bring the shield across Cook Strait, and Auckland will then not have to go very far south in quest of the trophy, which means a. saving in expense. * * * The Grounds Situation.—Why can the men not play on No. 1 ground? is a question frequently heard at Remuera. Discussing the position yesterday, Mr. Hewitt said that the new controlling authority, the Auckland Girls’ Athletic Association, holds that grounds Nos. 1, 4 and 5 are not fit for heavy play. News indeed! Since when have these fields become unfit? If one’s recollection is right, the grounds in question have stood up to senior men’s hockey for a number of seasons. If this is the only explanation the Girls’ Association can give, then it does appear rather meagre. One thing is probable—the relegation of the men to second-rate grounds is not benefiting the exchequer of the controlling authority. People are not going to stand out in the wet watching the men on Nos. 2 and 3 grounds Statistics of gate revenue are not available for last year, and the elapsed months of this, but from the thinned ranks of the “gallery” one may presume that women’s hockey is not exactly a public thrill. It is hard to

see that commodious grandstand practically denuded week after week. Tour of Australia.—Jn ordinary circumstances a New Zealand hockey side is scheduled to tour Australia next year, but at present no definite move has been made by the authorities either on this or the other side of the Tasman SATURDAY’S FIXTURES The following is the draw of matches to be played under the control of the Auckland Hockey Association on Saturday next: Senior Grade.—University v.
