A circular letter was received from the Good Templars’ Lodge at last ordinary meeting of the council, urging that the council make full provision for complete control over the issue of licences to cabarets and dance halls, making it a condition that intoxicating liquors are not allowed in such places, and that provision should be made for the cancelling of any licence in the event of a breach “In view of the peril this growing evil is creating,” the letter continued, “protection for young men and women attending thees places in ever-growing numbers, the council is urged to take the precautions a-dvocated.” The circular was received and laid on the table without discussion.
