“HIGH SOCIETY” The audible screen's greatest pair 0 f sweethearts, Janet Gaynor and Charles Farrell, are again co-starred in “High Society,” Fox Movietone musical m mance, coming to the Civic Theatre t<g day. “High Society” is adapted from a short story by Dana Burnet, which recently appeared in the Saturdar “Evening I’ost” and details the trouble of a wholesale grocer from a small lowa town, who sells his business ta chain-store corporation for several millions and then tries to crash the ex elusive social set of Vestchesui County, Xew York Miss Gavnor is the daughter of the socially promises, and wealthy famih which controls the chain - store system. while Farrell is the son of the lowa grocer, ad. dieted to the ukn. lele. The lowans bur an estate righ» across the road from Janet's family and try to be neighbourly, but janet s motner, who has arranged it engagement between her daughter and a foreign count, snubs the outlindera How the lowa grocer, with his dander aroused by an insult to one of hii wife's pies, finally brings “high, hatted” society to its knees while meantime an absorbing romance blossoms between Janet and Charles makes one of the most interesting pro. ductions of this type yet turned out for the audible screen. The young stars are surrounded by a east of unusual strength, irc’.udint William Collier, senr., Joyce Compton. Hedda Hopper, Louise Fazenda, Lucien Littlefield and Brandon Hurst. David Butler, who guided Miss Gsynor and Farrell so successfully to new fame in their first musical comedy othe screen, “Sunny Side Up,” also 4j. rected this delightful comedy romance As usual, an excellent suprortlnr programme will be presented. On the musical side, there will be the overture “II Trovatore" (Verdi), playedl by Ted Henkel's Civic Concert Orchestra and Fred Scholl will play the quarts from “Rigoletto.” An added attraction at the CM« Theatre tonight is the film with vieeri of Amy Johnson in Australia. M:sJohnson actually speaks direct froa the screen to the audience.
