FOR WINTER CUP

HAVERING’S MISSION ELLERSLIE FORM WAS GOOD After Havering's sterling win at Ellerslie last Saturday many would fancy the four-year-old’s chance in the big mile at Trentham next month, but the connections have decided to forgo this meeting in favour of Riccarton. where an attempt will be made to carry off the Winter Cup. Of course, the trip depends largely on the weight accorded the son of Quin Abbey. He is sure to be one of the early favourites. Havering raced very true at the winter meeting, his three efforts resulting in a fourth, third and a first. He was up where the weight begins to tell, and the manner in which he revelled in his work at the end of his contests marks him as a decidedly useful horse over a mile —a distance which he has yet to experiment with. Whatever his weight at Riccarton, it should not prevent him from putting up a big showing, for he is a powerful type who makes light of his burden, while conditions underfoot are of no serious consequence, as he has shown he is at home in any going. Havering is owned by a Hawera sportsman, Mr. J. M. Corcoran (who recently took over the training of the horse), and he was purchased at the Trentham yearling sales for 350gns. Previously the owner had no acquaintance with the racing game, and he must be indeed pleased to own such a good one at his first speculation.
