NEWMARKET RATES

ESTIMATES BEFORE COUNCIL Financial estimates and rates to be struck for the year 1930-31 were considered by the Newmarket Borough Council at its meeting last evening. The Mayor, Mr. S. Donaldson, presided. It is to be moved at the next meeting of the council that a consolidated rate of 3s 3d in the £ is to be levied in the borough. Of this sum, the hospital charge is sd, the general rate Is, and special rate Is lOd. Though there is a decrease in the general rate of 2d in the £. this is balanced by a similar increase in the special loan rate. The_ total estimated expenditure is £28,373. The rate of 3s 3d will produce £14.600, and revenue expected from other sources will be £13.619. Thus an estimated deficiency of £154 is left. In the last financial year, however, a substantial surplus was revealed at the end of the period, although a deficiency greater than that in this year's estimates was budgetted for. The largest individual item of expenditure is expected in the waterworks account. This is the estimated sum of £5,500 as payment to the City Council, compared with £4,333 last year. Considerable increase in revenue is expected, however, from the water rates. The hospital levy has been increased by £l7O to £1.955.
