TONS OF BROKEN GLASS

AMOUNT DISPOSED OF EACH WEEK DISTILLERS’ LOSS More than 10 tons of broken glass are disposed of every week by the firm of W. and A. Gilbey, distillers and wine-growers. This information comes from Captain Montague Polley, who has come out to New Zealand as the personal representative and attorney of the Gilbey firm. He arrived by the Rangitane. Many New Zealanders who passed through the “bull-ring” at Etaples during the war will remember Captain Polley. He was attached to the Seaforth Highlanders and was appointed to the training depot at Etaples for a time. Usually the name Gilbey is associated with a brand of gin which is well known throughout the Dominion, but Captain Polley gave some particulars this morning of the other activities of the firm. Gilbeys are the biggest shippers of port from Oporto in the world. They also deal extensively in sherry, and have their own chateau in France; they have three whisky distilleries in Scotland and a -gin distillery in London. Although the firm now has its own gin distillery in Australia, supplies for the New Zealand market will continue to be drawn from the London house. This also applies to the firm’s other products which are used in the Dominion.

Captain Polley is making his first visit to New Zealand and intends to see the whole of the Dominion before settling down. He will stay here for two or three years before returning to England.
