CHINESE MINISTER

WELCOMED BY PRESBYTERY To be addressed in Chinese by a fully ordained Chinese minister was the unique experience of the Auckland Presbytery at its meeting last ••vening. The minister was the Rev. Y. S. Chau, of Canton, who has recently copie to Auckland to work among his people here. In introducing Mr. Chau to the Presbytery, the Rev. W. Mawson, foreign mission secretary, explained how Mr. Chau came to accept the invitation to New Zealand. Mr. Chau had been associated with the Canadian Presbyterian Church in China and had been educated at the Union College in Canton, where the Rev. G. H. McNeur and Mrs. McNeur, of New Zealand, had assisted him in his studies. Mr. Chau had graduated six years ago and came to New Zealand as a tried and proved Christian worker. Speaking through Mr. Mawson as interpreter. Mr. Chau returned thanks for the welcome accorded him. Speaking of China, he said that sometimes his people welcomed new doctrines like Communism, but that was dangerous and led only to destruction.

He referred to his indebtedness to the Rev. G. H. McNeur and described the church he had charge of in China. He looked for assistance in New Zealand in enlarging his own knowledge of the Bible and carrying out church work. The moderator. the Rev. F. A. Thompson, assured Mr. Chau that the Presbytery would do all in its power to assist him.
