LAND SETTLEMENT
MANUREWA TOWN BOARD
When a letter was received from the Workers’ Educational Association at last evening’s meeting of the Manur«£wa Town Board, asking that the board make the customary donation to the finances of the club, Mr. Osborne said that the previous donations were made on condition that the association delivered lectures in the district. As the ratepayers had indicated they did not want the lectures, he questioned the advisability of making the donation. In proposing that a donation of £2 2s be made, Mr. Fawcett said it was a pity to lose touch with such an institution. The proposal was carried. On the recommendation of Mr. Burr.ard it was decided to donate the sum of £2 2s to the Great South Road Beautifying Society for the purpose of carrying out beautifying work in the society’s area.. On the recommendation of Mr. Fawcett, the clerk was authorised to advise the Minister of Public Works and Mr. J. W. Massey, M.P. for Franklin, that the board is in favour of increasing the petrol-tax, with a view to relieving the local bodies of the construction and maintenance charges on the main highways, and making the users of the road the payers of the upkeep.
