In the Market Place

EGG PRICES FALLING FRUIT AT HIGHER RATES With a smaller demand and supplies increasing fast as hens come back into production, the recent high prices for eggs show definite signs of falling sharply and coming back to normal shortly. First quality special grade hen eggs are now fetching 3s 1d a dozen at the City Markets, with duck eggs 2d a dozen cheaper for special grade and 1d a dozen for A and B grades. Grade C eggs are now being listed, fetching Is lid a dozen for hen eggs and 2s a dozen for duck eggs. However, the latter are appreciably larger than the same grade hen egg. At the City Market auctions this morning there was an acute shortage of lemons and these sold at verj r high rates. Better prices were also forthcoming for passions, dessert and prime cooking apples, and for hothouse tomatoes, the outdoor local product being almost finished. Hothouse grapes were in short supply and brought good prices. Pears were in short demand. Further supplies of Australian fruit arrived in Auckland this morning by the Ulimaroa and will be sold at the City Markets tomorrow. High rates for good green peas and beans are forthcoming as the supplies of both are almost finished. Vegetables are again in over supply and the demand only fair. There are no local potatoes on the market.
