SIXTY MILES AN HOUR
WITHOUT NUMBER PLATES INSPECTOR'S LONG CHASE Keeping ahead of the traffic inspector at 60 miles an hour cost William Forder £5 and court fees 13s at the Otahuhu Court yesterday afternoon. On a further charge of using a motorcycle without registration plates, he was fined £1 and ordered to pay court costs 13s. Inspector Breed, of the Otahuhu Borough Council staff, said he saw defendant travelling south along the Great South Road. He travelled at a moderate speed until past the Transport Company’s garage, when he suddenly accelerated, and continued at a fast speed toward the memorial monument. He had no number-plates on the cycle, and sped on toward Mangere, with the inspector in hot pursuit, but witness was losing ground all the time. The cyclist then turned and came toward the inspector's car, but on noticing him he suddenly swung round. In continuing the chase, the inspector’s car touched 60 miles an hour, but he could not get within half a mile of defendant. The chase continued for a distance of about six or seven miles along Massey Road, Buckland Road, and Favona Road, where the quarry was eventually lost. The culprit was eventually located in consequence of information given by a witness of the chase. When interviewed, Forder denied having his machine on the road on the day in question.
