PIONEER SETTLER

75 YEARS IN NEW ZEALAND KNEW EARLY CANTERBURY Seventy-five years of life in New .Zealand have been experienced by Aliss Elizabeth Tyler Smith. a pione-'r settlor of Canterbury, now resident in Auckland, who will celebrate her 90th birthday on Friday. For the past nine years Aliss Smi’.. has resided at Great South Road. The trip to New Zealand from England on the sailing ship Caroline Agn-" occupied four months. When Miss Smith and her brother landed at Lyttelton they had to walk over the Cashmere Ilills to Christchurch. A brother-in-law. Mr. William Derrett. was farming at Papanui. and Mias Smith resided there. Papanui is now populous, but in those clays the bush road to Christchurch was little more than a track for bullock wagons. In winter the road could be traversed only by bullocks, except when the bog froze sufficiently to provide a firm surface for pedestrians. When Aliss Smith and Mr. and MrsDerrett moved to Oaraaru. the journev with a dog-cart and two drays took two weeks. Aliss Smith lived at Pa tea. Taranaki, for 20 years. In that time hostile Alaori tribes threatened the European settlors and men drilled daily in the township to be prepared for an attack.
