CITY SUBDIVISION
STATION SITE CHANGES BEING DEBATED DECISION FROM WELLINGTON Any announcement on the subdivision of the present site of the Auckland railway station is expected by a responsible Railway Department official, to be made from Wellington. Final arrangements regarding the subdivision have apparently not yet been reached. According to the official, negotiations are proceeding between the general manager of the Railway Department. Mr. H. 11. Sterling. the Auckland Harbour Board, the Auckland City Council, and lessees of properties which would be concerned in the subdivision. “There have been conferences recently between the interested parties,” the official remarked to The Sun this morning. ‘No definite agreement has been made and the announcement of Lite complete arrangements and plans will almost certainly come from Wellington from the general manager or the Alinister of Railways, the Hon. W. A. Veitch. The whole question is being dealt with by the department from. Wellington.” A plan proposing certain features of the subdivision has the extensions of Gore Street and Commerce Street to Quay Street as important features. There would be a new thoroughfare from Breakwater Road to join the extension of Gore Street, according to this plan. After the approval of such a plan by the Railway Department, consideration of the proposed street formations would be given by owners of properties adjacent to the present station, the Harbour Board, and the City Council, following a recommendation from the council’s Town Planning Committee. The demands of modern town-plan-ning are certain to receive the greatest consideration in any street scheme concerning the site. The ultimate plan will probably present extremely simple features.
