IN BANDITS’ HANDS

PATHETIC NOTE FROM NEW ZEALANDER APPEAL FOR HELP SOON SHANGHAI, Sunday. A pathetic letter has been received from Mrs. Porteous, a doctor, formerly of New Zealand, who was kidnapped on March 23 in the Yuanchow district. In spite of every effort the victim has not yet been released. Miss Gemmeli was set free and is a nervous wreck in a hospital in Hankow. The bandit chief now agrees to release Mrs. Porteous for 3,000 dollars cash and 1,200 dollars’ worth of medicine, but his subordinate refuses to carry out the order unless he is paid the original sum demanded, 60,000 dollars. Mrs. Porteous writes that she is suffering terribly, and whatever is done must be done quickly.
