ASSASSIN’S REVENGE
GERMAN AMBASSADOR SHOT DEAD PORTUGAL TRAGEDY United P.A.—By Telegraph Copyright LISBON. Saturday. A sensation was caused today by the assassination of Dr. Albert von Baligand, German Ambassador to Portugal. The diplomat was visiting th© German cruiser Koenigsberg when a man fired several shots at him from a revolver, as a result of which he died. Subsequently the police arrested Franz Pechowsky, aged 39, of Danzig. Pie is believed to be insane. The arrested man denies having been in communication with Moscow, in spite of the fact that incriminating telegrams were found in his possession. He was charged in 1927 with forging passports. Pechowsky declares that the assassination of Dr. von Baligand was actuated by a desire for revenge on a British, German or American diplomat, those countries having been responsible for his persecution.
