FOR FIRE-FIGHTING

NEW ST. HELIERS STATION BUILDING COST AUTHORISED Work will be started shortly on the new fire station which 'is to be built in Long Drive, St. Heliers, to serve the West Tamaki district. An Order-in-Council gazetted recently has given the Auckland Fire Board authority to increase its expenditure from £ 40,000 to £45,000, thus making £5,000 available for the new buiiding, which is estimated to cost £4,000. Plans and specifications for the new building were prepared some months ago and will be on the same lines as that erected recently at Avondale, a two-storeyed concrete building housing one engine. The site in Long Drive is centrally situated in the district, which includes Tamaki, St. Heliers, Kohimarama and the Orakei suburb, but the latter will also be served by the two engines of the Remuera brigade as soon as the concrete bridge over the Orakei basin is completed. The old road board offices have been converted into a temporary station, which will be used until the new building is ready. An alarm system is to be* installed shortly and an 8-inch feeder water main laid from the foot of Orakei Road, Remuera, to Orakei Point and along the watefront road to St. Heliers, augmenting the present supply at Orakei, Kohimarama and St. Heliers. It will also give greater pressure for fire-fighting.
